The most economical material for license plate inserts is Polyboard, a heavy off-white card stock with a poly coating for weather-resistance. The next step up in cost is Polystyrene. Polystyrene is white, fairly flexible, and can be printed to the edge of the plate like Polyboard. A disadvantage is that in extreme cold weather Polystyrene could crack on impact. Polyethylene is slightly more expensive, but more durable as well. This white material can not be printed to the edge, however, since the color could chip along the edge of the plate. Polyethylene holds up well in cold weather.
